The Union Workers’ Union (UWU), the recently formed union for staff of trade unions, has reacted with shock but not surprise following the publication of the damming report by Karon Monaghan QC into sexual harassment within GMB.

UWU Vice President Kay Nicholls said:

“Our members work in unions across the UK and will not be surprised by the findings in this report. Clearly GMB has some very serious cultural issues to resolve however, these issues aren’t limited to GMB. This issue and many others was the reason for the UWU’s recent formation.

“We applaud the courage GMB has shown by taking a long, hard look in the mirror. Our members working at GMB hope the union shows the same courage in respect of finding solutions that bring about lasting change.

“The UWU has written to the GMB President, Barbara Plant to offer support around the significant work ahead. We hope the GMB accept this offer in the spirit in which it’s intended.

“On behalf of the UWU I would like to express solidarity with the victims of abuse and say very clearly; our union will support you and work with all unions to make union workplaces safe for everyone.”

UWU Vice President Kay Nicholls
