Landmark Survey Launched to Map the State of the Trade Union Sector

Written by UWU | Wednesday 4 June, 8:00

A pioneering new survey has been launched today, aiming to capture an unprecedented snapshot of the trade union sector directly from the experiences of its workers. This initiative marks the first comprehensive research of its kind, designed to provide crucial insights into the current landscape of trade unions across the UK.

The survey, spearheaded by Union Workers' Union (UWU), seeks to gather data on a wide range of topics affecting trade union employees, including working conditions and morale across the sector. Importantly, participation is open to all individuals working within any trade union, irrespective of their membership with UWU.

"This is a truly significant moment for the trade union movement," stated Fiona Westwood, National Executive Committee member at UWU. "For too long, the internal workings and the realities faced by trade union staff have been under-researched. This survey will give a vital voice to those on the front lines, helping us understand the sector's strengths, weaknesses, and areas for growth, directly from their perspective."

The survey is now live and will remain open until late July 2025, allowing ample time for all eligible workers to contribute their valuable insights. The findings from this extensive data collection are anticipated to be published in a comprehensive first report in Autumn 2025.

"The more diverse voices we capture, the richer and more representative our findings will be," added Marianne Quick, National Executive Committee member at UWU. "We strongly encourage all trade union workers to take a few minutes to complete the survey and, crucially, to share it with their colleagues and friends across the sector. Their participation is key to building a robust and impactful understanding of our collective future."

This inaugural survey is planned to be a biennial undertaking for UWU members, ensuring a regular pulse check on the evolving state of the trade union employment landscape.
