Tackling sexual violence in trade unions - our initial findings

Written by UWU | Friday 20 December, 16:48

Union Workers’ Union recently hosted two groundbreaking workshops aimed at reducing workplace sexual violence and we’re thrilled to share our initial findings. These sessions brought together members and supporters from across the movement to build understanding, reflect on lived experiences and take action towards creating safer workplaces.

Defining and mapping sexual violence

We started with a focus on building a shared understanding of sexual violence. Together, we:

  • Defined sexual violence to establish a common language and understanding.
  • Mapped our lived experiences, situating them within the broader framework of structural power.
  • Explored standards, learning how these tools can help foster safer spaces in our workplaces and communities.

Refining our approach and taking action

We later developed some initial standards:

  • Reflected on key insights from our shared discussions.
  • Analysed independent standards to deepen our understanding and refine our union’s position.
  • Started co-creating new standards tailored to address sexual violence and promote accountability.

What’s Next?

These workshops are just the beginning. Through our new women’s network, Sisters to the Front, we are creating an independent, union-led network of women trade union workers to combat workplace sexual violence and foster safer spaces for all members.

In 2025, we’re building on this work with a further two workshops and we'll announce dates and how to sign up in the new year.

Thank you to everyone who participated - you’re driving meaningful change! If you’d like to get involved or share feedback, contact us.

Together, can build a safer, stronger union movement.
