Calling women union workers

Calling women union workers…Following the allegations circulating the movement in recent weeks it’s never been more clear; we need a strong, independent and campaigning union to ensure work is a safe space for everyone, especially women unions workers. The UWU was delighted to receive an invitation to speak at the recent Sister’s to the Front online conference, hosted by the TUC. We hoped to join the discussion on how self organisation for union workers’ is long overdue. Unfortunately, following a complaint by persons unknown, our union’s invite was revoked at short notice. After some time to reflect we are more determined than ever to grow our women union workers’ network. Moving forward we’re calling on all women union workers to join up, join in be the change you want to see across this great movement of ours.

The road to success

This month we held our first virtual branch meeting electing 4 new UWU reps. Keep an eye on your emails as we’ll be calling branch meetings at every one of the 14 unions we now have membership in. Further elections for national posts are coming soon.

What we look like

The core UWU team recently completed our first equality audit. We are 53% women members, 8% BAME members, 14% LGBT+ members and 16% disabled members. We want our lay structures to fully reflect or membership and all our members have something to contribute so please, drop us a line for a call back on our opportunities for activism.

Our next steps

Our survey of potential members demonstrated solid legal cover is at the top of most union workers’ wish list. Since then we’ve been exploring service level agreements with legal firms and reviewing quotes for a block insurance scheme to fund our member’s legal claims. Stay tuned.
